Field notes

Every rate on the rest of this site was read off a gym's own website on a dated day. These are the visits: 3 filmed so far, one gym at a time.

3 visits have been filmed for this series, and all 3 of them now have an entry. All 3 name the gym they were shot in, 2 match a camp listed here, and the other one is a gym this site holds no record for. An entry publishes on 3 separate things written down off the footage, and every visit filmed so far has cleared it. None of it has moved a camp record to verified, because a visit only does that where the footage settles a field the camp itself never published, and footage of a room settles what the room is and not what an hour in it costs. The filming is Ollie's, credited by name and linked back to the account it came from, which is the opposite arrangement to a directory passing somebody else's clip off as its own research.

Filming a numbered series: finding the best Muay Thai gym in Thailand.

Ollie posts a numbered series on Instagram under a single title, finding the best Muay Thai gym in Thailand. One gym per entry: turn up, train the session, put up what it was like. The account bio reads "muay thai enthusiast", not fighter, and that is the accurate description of nearly everyone who flies here to train. It is also the reason the series is worth reading rather than only watching.

We publish these visits as field notes because the rest of this site is a desk. Every rate here was read off a gym's own website on a dated day, which is a real thing to know and not the same thing as standing in the place at six in the morning. The gap between those two is most of what somebody booking a month actually wants.

How to read one

Three grades of claim

A visit produces statements of three different strengths. Flattening them into one list is how a visit report turns into an advertisement, so each line on a note carries its grade. 16 lines across the notes so far, graded like this:

Seen is visible in the footage. It is ours to assert, and it is the only grade strong enough to move a camp record to verified on the ground. 13 of them carry this grade.

Said by the gym is a claim the gym made to us. Worth printing, worth having, and printed with the attribution left attached rather than laundered into our own voice. 3 of them carry this grade.

Figure quoted is a price or a number given across a desk. It is the weakest of the three and it never becomes a published rate on a camp record, because a number said once to one visitor is not a rate the gym stands behind. None of them carry this grade. It is set out anyway, because a visit will eventually produce one and where it sits is better settled before that than after.

The series

The series so far

Listed newest first. An entry gets a page of its own once the visit has enough on it to be worth reading over the footage; until then it is listed here with the gym, the date and what is still open.

    Day three, Sitjaroonsak

    Sitjaroonsak Muaythai Gym, Bang Wa

Sitjaroonsak Muaythai Gym, on the BTS at Bang Wa rather than in the tourist centre.

    Still open

    • What a session costs and what the schedule is. Nothing is published on a page we can read.
    • Whether the gym spars, and how hard, which is the question that decides most bookings. The clip shows pads and bags and no sparring.
    • Whether the accommodation it mentions is on site or a separate listing nearby.

    Day two

Eminent Air Muay Thai, Phra Khanong

Eminent Air Muay Thai, at the end of a Bangkok residential lane, found by following a roadside sign.

day 2 of finding the best muay thai gym in thailand #bangkokmuaythai #thailand #fighter

    Still open

    • Which session a visitor is put in. The gym sells one session for 500 baht and publishes two a day, both of them labelled fighters' training, and nothing on the page says where somebody walking in for an hour goes.
    • What the placard on the wall is. It ends in 93 and the street number the gym publishes is 114/2, so the two do not resolve to the same thing.
    • Who Prakayphet is on the staff. The reel names the trainer it films; the gym's own trainers page, which has not changed since 2022, lists eight people and he is not one of them.

    Por Kobkua Gym

Por Kobkua Gym, training in the open under an unfinished elevated structure on the eastern side of Bangkok.

    Still open

    • What a session costs and what the schedule is. No figure is quoted in the reel and the gym has no page here we can read.
    • Whether either fighter filmed competes on RWS, which the reel asserts and the footage does not settle.
    • Whether the gym takes visitors at all, or trains its own fighters only.

Run a gym worth a visit?

Tell us where you are and what a week actually costs. A visit closes more of a record than a desk check ever will, and the record stays yours to correct either way.
