Training Brazilian jiu jitsu in Thailand

Where the mats are, and why most people end up doing BJJ alongside Muay Thai rather than instead of it.

6 camps listed · updated 2026-09-01

The short answer

BJJ in Thailand is largely found inside the bigger multi-discipline camps, which makes it easy to train twice a day across two sports. Standards vary a lot more between gyms than they do in Muay Thai, so the coach matters more than the camp name.

The realistic use case is complementary training. Doing BJJ in the morning and Muay Thai in the evening is a genuinely good way to keep training when your shins are wrecked.

Because the scene is smaller, the depth of the room varies. A camp with a resident black belt and a busy mat is a different experience from one running an open mat when someone is available.

Ask about belt levels in the room, not just the head coach. Who you roll with decides what you learn.

Ask this before you book

Heat, hygiene and skin infections are a real issue on Thai mats. Ask how often the mats are cleaned, and treat cuts and scrapes properly rather than training through them.

Camps that run Brazilian jiu jitsu

Every one of these also runs Muay Thai, which is the usual reason to be here. Where we have not confirmed a timetable or a price, the camp page says so rather than filling the gap.

Tiger Muay Thai

Chalong, Phuket / Large camp

The largest and best-known training complex in Thailand, running Muay Thai alongside a full MMA and BJJ programme. Big enough that you can always find training partners at your level, and structured enough that a total beginner is never left guessing. The trade-off is scale: it feels like a fitness resort rather than a Thai gym, and it is priced accordingly.

Phuket Top Team

Chalong, Phuket / Mid-size camp

MMA-first gym rather than a Muay Thai camp that added MMA. The right pick if mixed martial arts is the actual goal and Muay Thai is one component of it. A poor pick if you want a traditional Thai Muay Thai experience.

Bangtao Muay Thai & MMA

Bang Tao, Phuket / Mid-size camp

Based on the north-west coast near Bang Tao beach rather than in the southern camp cluster, which changes the whole trip: quieter beaches, more of a resort setting, longer drive to the Chalong and Rawai scene.

Superpro Samui

Chaweng, Koh Samui / Mid-size camp

The main established training option on Koh Samui, running a mixed programme with fitness classes alongside Muay Thai. Works well for a training-and-holiday split, or for someone travelling with a partner who is not training.

Elite Fight Club

Bangkok / Mid-size camp

Multi-discipline Bangkok club covering Muay Thai, MMA and BJJ under one roof. The practical pick if you are in Bangkok for work or a long stay and want a gym rather than a camp experience.

Large resort-style training centre attached to the best-known equipment brand in the sport, with on-site accommodation and food. Polished and self-contained, which is either the appeal or the drawback depending on what you came for.
