Where to train

Training Muay Thai in Koh Samui

เกาะสมุย

The larger of the two Gulf training islands, in Surat Thani province, with a scene built around a holiday rather than a fight camp. That makes it the easier place to bring somebody who is not training. Getting here is the cost people underestimate: the island airport is privately operated and fares into it run well above the mainland, so the cheaper route in is a flight to Surat Thani and then the bus and the ferry. A shorter list of camps than Phuket, and a shorter list of trainers to work with.

Camps in Koh Samui

Superpro Samui

Chaweng, Koh Samui, mid-size camp

The main established training option on Koh Samui, running a mixed programme with fitness classes alongside Muay Thai. Works well for a training-and-holiday split, or for someone travelling with a partner who is not training.

Punch It Gym

Lamai, Koh Samui, mid-size camp

Four public classes a day, two of them labelled beginner, and beds on the gym's own plot rather than farmed out to partner hotels. The rooms are priced by the night and published, which almost no camp in Thailand bothers to do. Fighter classes run but are not open to drop-ins, so the public timetable is the beginner and advanced sessions, six days a week. The gym is mid-move to a second site three and a half kilometres away and its own pages disagree about which address the classes run at, so confirm before booking. It also answers the two questions most camps dodge: the trainers have basic English with the fluent English at the desk, and there are no women-only classes but women train in every session.

Yodyut Muaythai

Koh Samui, small camp

Two group sessions a day, Monday to Saturday, priced in two columns so training once a day costs a good deal less than training twice. Every tier from one week to one month is published in both columns, which makes it unusually easy to work out what a stay costs before arriving. Privates run in the gap between the two group classes rather than alongside them, so they need booking ahead. Nothing on the site mentions rooms, which makes accommodation here unknown rather than absent. The gym names its founder, a former champion, and dates itself to 2014.

How far apart

Getting between the camps in Koh Samui

Measured in a straight line between coordinates the camps publish themselves. It is not a road distance and not a journey time, so read each figure as the shortest the trip can possibly be rather than the trip itself.

The closest two camps we have placed in Koh Samui are Superpro Samui and Punch It Gym, 4.7 km apart in a straight line. The furthest two sit 11 km apart, and none of them are close enough to walk between.

Read off the camps listed here and nowhere else. The low and the high are figures a camp prints itself, never an average or a midpoint, and the count sits beside each one because a band drawn from two camps tells you less than it looks like it does.

When to come

Training weather in Koh Samui

Almost every camp in Thailand trains under a roof, so rain cancels your run and your beach day rather than your session. What the calendar below actually decides is heat, humidity, air quality and how full the camp is, which is why the wettest stretch is often the cheapest and emptiest one to train in.
Driest
January to April
Wettest
roughly October to December
Calendar

The year, January on the left. Solid is the driest stretch and the dot screen the wettest.

This is the inversion worth knowing. Samui is at its wettest in the weeks when Phuket is at its driest, so a November trip and a November trip are not the same trip.

Where to watch

Fight nights in Koh Samui

Almost everyone who trains here also goes and watches. Finding out when is harder than it should be, because most Thai stadiums do not publish a card anywhere a visitor can check.

What people ask about training in Koh Samui

Every figure below is read off the camps filed under this region at build time rather than written by hand, so a question this region has no record behind is left out instead of answered softly.
How much does it cost to train Muay Thai in Koh Samui?
All 3 camps here print a month, and those months run 7,500 to 9,600 baht with 8,000 in the middle, below the 10,000 baht middle for the country. All 3 camps print what a single group session costs, running 400 to 500 baht, below the 450 baht middle for the country. Every one of those figures was read off a camp's own website rather than quoted to us, and the camps that print nothing are counted in the denominator rather than left out of it, so the range is what this region publishes and not what it charges. Food, a room off site and a visa run are all on top.
How many Muay Thai camps are there in Koh Samui?
This site lists 3 camps in Koh Samui, of 44 in Thailand, and 3 of them publish a price. That is a count of what we have checked and written up, not a census: Koh Samui has gyms that keep no website, gyms that run out of a yard behind a house and gyms nobody outside the province has heard of, and none of those can be listed honestly from a desk. Read the number as a floor.
Is Koh Samui a good place to start Muay Thai?
Yes, on this site's reading. All 3 camps listed here read as a fit for somebody who has never trained, and none of them reads as the wrong room for a beginner. Those are calls made at a desk from what each camp publishes about who it trains, not verdicts from the mats, so use them to build a shortlist and ask the camp how a first session actually runs. A gym built around a fight team will take a beginner's money and leave them holding pads at the back for a month.
Can you stay at the camp in Koh Samui?
At some of them. 2 of the 3 camps listed in Koh Samui say they have accommodation on site. One of those publishes a nightly rate and the other leaves it blank, because the camp never printed one. Where a camp sells training and a bed as a single package this site refuses to split the figure, which is most of why that column is as empty as it is. Staying in means the commute stops being a decision you make twice a day at five in the morning, which matters more than the saving.
How many sessions a day do camps in Koh Samui run?
2 of the 3 camps listed in Koh Samui print a timetable, and they run 2 to 4 sessions a day. That is how many are on offer and not how many anybody should plan on taking. A timetable says the door is open twice; how many times you walk through it is most of the difference between a training holiday and a camp, and a first week of doubles is how people spend a second week injured.
When is the best time to train Muay Thai in Koh Samui?
The driest stretch in Koh Samui runs January to April and the wettest is roughly October to December. Rain is the thing people plan around and close to the least important thing on this page: a wet month costs you the morning run and the beach, and almost nothing inside a gym with a roof. This is the inversion worth knowing. Samui is at its wettest in the weeks when Phuket is at its driest, so a November trip and a November trip are not the same trip.
Can you watch Muay Thai fights in Koh Samui?
Yes. The one venue in Koh Samui listed on this site is Phetchbuncha Stadium. It does not publish which nights it runs, so the card has to be checked locally in the week you want it rather than booked around from abroad. Watching a card in the first week is worth more than most of what gets written about technique, because it is the fastest way to see what the training is for.
