Camp against camp

Punch It Gym or Yodyut Muaythai

Two camps in Koh Samui, set against each other on what each one publishes about itself. Nothing below is our opinion of either.

Punch It Gym

A single class is 400 and two in a day 700. The week and month are published as flat tiers and the site does not say whether they cap sessions a day, so read them as the printed price and ask. Privates are 1,000 an hour, 9,000 for a ten hour pass, 1,500 for a pair with 500 for each extra person, and 2,500 at a hotel or villa. Rooms run from 1,440 a night for the gym fighter room up to 7,850, all on the gym's own grounds, with a stated discount of twenty five percent over thirty days and no figure attached to it.

Yodyut Muaythai

Everything is sold in two columns, one class a day and two. The week and month above are the two a day column, which covers both published sessions; one a day is 2,000 a week and 5,500 a month. In between sit two weeks at 3,500 and 5,000 and three weeks at 4,500 and 6,500. A single class is 400 and both classes in one day 700. Privates are 1,000 an hour, 1,500 for two people sharing a coach and 9,000 for ten sessions, which have to be used inside six weeks. Group classes run 08:00 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 19:00, Monday to Saturday, with privates booked into the gap between them. The site states that memberships cannot be paused and that no refunds are given.

Against the country

Each line runs from the cheapest figure listed camps print for that rate to the dearest, with Punch It Gym marked above the line, Yodyut Muaythai below it and the stretch between them inked. In baht, Punch It Gym first, then Yodyut Muaythai: one group session the same at 400, inside a run of 550 that 31 of 44 listed camps print; a week, unlimited the same at 3,500, inside a run of 3,700 that 21 of 44 listed camps print; a month, unlimited at 9,600 and 8,000, 1,600 apart inside a run of 14,001 that 26 of 44 listed camps print; one private the same at 1,000, inside a run of 900 that 22 of 44 listed camps print. Rates only one of the two publishes are left out, because a line carrying one mark says nothing about two camps.

They quote the same figure on 4 lines: one group session, a week unlimited, one private and takes beginners.

What we cannot tell you yet

Neither camp has been confirmed on the lines below, so this page does not compare them. They are named rather than left off, because a comparison that only shows the fields it happens to hold is the shape of a page pretending to be complete.

In their own words

What each camp is

Punch It Gym

Four public classes a day, two of them labelled beginner, and beds on the gym's own plot rather than farmed out to partner hotels. The rooms are priced by the night and published, which almost no camp in Thailand bothers to do. Fighter classes run but are not open to drop-ins, so the public timetable is the beginner and advanced sessions, six days a week. The gym is mid-move to a second site three and a half kilometres away and its own pages disagree about which address the classes run at, so confirm before booking. It also answers the two questions most camps dodge: the trainers have basic English with the fluent English at the desk, and there are no women-only classes but women train in every session.

Yodyut Muaythai

Two group sessions a day, Monday to Saturday, priced in two columns so training once a day costs a good deal less than training twice. Every tier from one week to one month is published in both columns, which makes it unusually easy to work out what a stay costs before arriving. Privates run in the gap between the two group classes rather than alongside them, so they need booking ahead. Nothing on the site mentions rooms, which makes accommodation here unknown rather than absent. The gym names its founder, a former champion, and dates itself to 2014.

What people ask about Punch It Gym and Yodyut Muaythai

Every figure below is read off the two records at build time rather than written by hand, so a question neither camp has published anything behind is left out instead of answered softly.
Is Punch It Gym or Yodyut Muaythai cheaper?
Yodyut Muaythai, on the line most trips are booked on. A month of unlimited training is 8,000 baht there against 9,600 baht at Punch It Gym, a gap of 1,600 baht. They both quote 3 other priced lines, and 3 come out level. A cheaper month is not a cheaper trip. Food, a room where the camp has none and the flight home all sit outside these figures, and a camp that is 2,000 baht dearer a month is the cheaper of the two the moment it saves you a daily taxi.
What is the difference between Punch It Gym and Yodyut Muaythai?
2 of the 6 lines both camps publish come out different: a month of unlimited training and how many sessions a day run. They match on a single group session, a week of unlimited training, a private session and whether beginners are taken. Punch It Gym publishes a nightly room rate, whether there are rooms on site, whether the trainers speak English and whether there is a programme for women. Yodyut Muaythai publishes none of those. What separates two camps on the mats is the trainer you get put with, and no camp publishes that. Use the lines above to cut the list down, then ask both.
Is Punch It Gym or Yodyut Muaythai better for a beginner?
Both. Punch It Gym and Yodyut Muaythai each read as a room somebody who has never trained can walk into. That is a call made at a desk from what each camp publishes about who it trains, not a verdict from the mats. A gym built around a fight team will take a beginner's money and leave them holding pads at the back for a month, so ask both how a first session actually runs before you book either.
Can you stay at Punch It Gym or Yodyut Muaythai?
Punch It Gym says you can sleep at the camp. Yodyut Muaythai publishes nothing either way, so that line stays blank. Punch It Gym prints a nightly rate at 1,440 baht. Staying in means the commute stops being a decision you make twice a day at five in the morning, which matters more than the saving on most trips shorter than a month.
How many sessions a day do Punch It Gym and Yodyut Muaythai run?
Punch It Gym runs 4 sessions a day and Yodyut Muaythai runs 2. That is how many are on offer and not how many anybody should plan on taking. A timetable says when the door is open; how many times you walk through it is most of the difference between a training holiday and a camp, and a first week of doubles is how people spend a second week injured.
How far apart are Punch It Gym and Yodyut Muaythai?
About 11 km in a straight line, measured between the two pins rather than along a road, so a motorbike covers more ground than that and traffic decides the rest. Both camps sit in Koh Samui. That is a ride rather than a walk, so trying both in one trip means picking a base and paying to cross, or splitting the stay in two.
