Chiang Mai for people who have never trained

Training Muay Thai in Chiang Mai as a beginner

The northern alternative to Phuket for a first trip, cheaper and calmer, with one seasonal problem worth planning around.

Updated 2026-09-01

The short version

Chiang Mai suits a first trip if you want the training without the resort. Camps are smaller and less packaged than Phuket, the city is cheaper to live in, and the cooler months make two sessions a day survivable from an untrained base.

The scene has been there a long time and it is built around people staying weeks rather than days, which changes the room. You are more likely to train with the same people repeatedly, and that is how beginners improve fastest.

The city itself does a lot of the work. Living costs are lower than the islands, there is somewhere to go on a rest day, and the airport connects domestically without an island ferry in the way.

The trade-off against Phuket is choice. Fewer camps means fewer chances to walk away from one that does not suit you.

Where this goes wrong

Air quality drops sharply during the northern burning season, roughly February to April. Training hard through it is genuinely unpleasant, and for a first trip it is a reason to pick different dates or a different region.
