Before you go
How long should my first training trip be?

The short answer
Two to four weeks is the sweet spot for a first trip. A week is mostly jet lag and soreness. Somewhere in the second week your body stops fighting the schedule, and that is when people report actually improving.
The first three or four days are brutal for almost everyone, regardless of fitness at home. Twice-daily training loads muscles and joints in an unfamiliar pattern, and being able to run a half marathon does not protect your shins.
A week-long trip spends its whole length in that phase. You will enjoy it and you will learn something, but you will fly home just as your body was working out what was happening.
A month gives you two clear weeks of real training after the adjustment, which is enough to fix one or two things properly. Beyond a month you are making a lifestyle decision, and the questions change to accommodation, visas and whether you can stay motivated without a return flight forcing the issue.
Worth knowing
Book the flight home later than the training you have paid for. People extend far more often than they cut a trip short, and changing a flight from Thailand is easier than buying a new one.
