Ritual and respect
Sarama
The fight music
What it means
The live music played during a Muay Thai bout, built on a reed instrument, drums and cymbals. It follows the fight, speeding up as the pace lifts.
It sounds chaotic on a first listen and it is doing a job: it sets the rhythm of the wai kru and then tracks the intensity of the rounds.
Watching a stadium fight without it, on a stream with commentary over the top, is a genuinely different experience.
