Phuket for people who have never trained

Training Muay Thai in Phuket as a beginner

Phuket is the easiest place in Thailand to arrive with no experience, and the reasons for that are also its drawbacks.

Updated 2026-09-01

The short version

Phuket is the softest landing in Thailand for a first trip. Camps are used to people who have never trained, English is widespread, and accommodation, food and transport are all solved for you. You pay for that in cost and in atmosphere.

The concentration of camps around Rawai and Chalong means you can walk into three gyms in a day and pick the one that felt right, which is worth more than any amount of reading. Nowhere else in Thailand gives you that.

It is also the most commercial scene in the country. That is not an insult: commercial means a beginners session that actually exists, a trainer who has taught your exact mistake a thousand times, and someone at reception who can sort a scooter and a SIM card.

What you will not get is immersion. You will train alongside other foreigners, mostly, and the experience will feel closer to an excellent gym abroad than to a Thai fight camp.

Where this goes wrong

The mistake is booking a famous fighter camp because you recognised the name. Those camps are in Phuket too, and being the least experienced person in a hard room is a poor way to spend a first week.

Phuket camps we would put in front of people who have never trained

Matched on what we have verified, not on who pays us. Anything we have not confirmed about a camp is marked as such on its page.

Tiger Muay Thai

Chalong, Phuket / Large camp

The largest and best-known training complex in Thailand, running Muay Thai alongside a full MMA and BJJ programme. Big enough that you can always find training partners at your level, and structured enough that a total beginner is never left guessing. The trade-off is scale: it feels like a fitness resort rather than a Thai gym, and it is priced accordingly.

Rawai Muay Thai

Rawai, Phuket / Mid-size camp

One of the older established camps in the Rawai cluster, with a mixed crowd of holiday trainees and longer-stay fighters. On-site accommodation and a walkable location put it in the practical middle of the Phuket options.

Dragon Muay Thai

Chalong, Phuket / Mid-size camp

Mid-sized Chalong camp with a reputation for a friendly, less intimidating atmosphere than the larger complexes nearby. A reasonable first camp for someone nervous about walking into a hard gym.

Sumalee Boxing Gym

Thalang, Phuket / Small camp

Smaller camp in the quieter north of Phuket, away from the Rawai and Chalong concentration. Being out of the tourist strip is the point: fewer distractions, smaller groups, more trainer attention. Less convenient if you want nightlife or a big social scene.

Bangtao Muay Thai & MMA

Bang Tao, Phuket / Mid-size camp

Based on the north-west coast near Bang Tao beach rather than in the southern camp cluster, which changes the whole trip: quieter beaches, more of a resort setting, longer drive to the Chalong and Rawai scene.
